Here's a link to my Ni no Kuni piece if you haven't seen it yet: http://videogamewriters.com/ni-no-kuni-59894

I don't think my opinion is nearly as negative as all the comments seem to think it is, but I really had some issues with it overall. I may have grown out of that style of RPG in some ways, so perhaps some elements of it that only feel like small annoyances for some were larger issues for me. Anyway, check it out if you haven't yet! I liked playing it when cooling down from more intense titles. As for My Ex-Boyfriend, that is a nice little game but I struggled with it because there were many glitches in the initial version. But I corresponded with the developer and thankfully we (and others) were able to clear up bugs together. It was the most challenging because of being physically impossible to finish at a point, haha, but otherwise far from the hardest adventure game out there.

Kentucky Route Zero is also really cool and easily has the most appealing visuals of any game out this year. Seriously, the developers have an awesome sense of style, so that stuck with me.

Ni No Kuni is a game I just can't touch.... Well, yet. Part of me worries it won't be good as hoped or that I'll tire out after some amount of hours. What is the piece you wish to do about Ni No Kuni about, if you can mention it?

Nope, I've got no goals set in stone. Although, it would be cool to beat some of the popular games from last year, or the year before. Mostly I have been so out of the loop with modern AAA games it's incredible XD. I have exactly 0 cleared backlog games to my name at this point >_<

Looking at your list, I really want to try Wizorb (which I already own), My Ex-Boyfriend the Space Tyrant!, and Kentucky Route Zero. Which of the ones you played were the most memorable? Any that you struggled to finish?

February was particularly difficult due to my decision to try to tackle Ni no Kuni for a piece for VideoGameWriters (which I still haven't finished...), and my disappointment with that really had an impact on my enjoyment of other games, for some reason.

Well, onward and upward, I say! Do you have any personal goals for your backlog challenge for the year, or are you just trying to clear as many titles as possible? I certainly would read whatever you have to say about them, at the very least.

BTW, I'm like both of you in many respects: I'm also finding myself a bit less interested in 'hardcore' games than I used to be. Of course, I never was interested in FPS games and the like, but I've always been interested in pretty much every other genre.

Although I still play RPGs and strategy games (at least certain ones), I don't play as many as I used to, and the ones I do play receive less of my attention than they used to.Bryan Ochallahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16256591698209804728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-70222422549018155962012-11-29T15:48:03.745-08:002012-11-29T15:48:03.745-08:00I've never been especially good at games eithe...I've never been especially good at games either... but it certainly doesn't stop me from trying them! Part of lower tolerance might even be due to being spoiled for choice these days. Between tons of Steam sales and discounted retail games you really have a wide array of choices at all times. Why spend 50+ hours struggling through dungeons when there's something else worth playing?

Yeah, I mean, I have a feeling there are other people writing about casual games but it's something most gamers aren't actually exposed to. Sometimes they're awful but sometimes they're really good too :o. But then again I never was very "good" at games anyway and tend to give up/get bored rather easily.

On the topic of casual games: I'd love to see you blog about them! I don't think a traditional review format is necessarily the way to go, but there's definitely a space for talking about titles like the Nancy Drew games. I really like hearing about things no one else is talking about. So I say go for it! When Bayonetta got announced and came out, for example, I barely batted an eyebrow. However, it's also because of this that I make other decisions--like that I never really play any multiplayer games online. Not only do I not think that I'm that great, but just the fact that I'm female makes me not want to deal with the problems.

There's other things, like the general surprised response of anyone that learns I play video games for a hobby, and more than just 'casual' gaming. Or when people never took me seriously when I played against them in Guilty Gear X2 (that was a mistake on their part). I've desensitized myself to it, but the reality is I shouldn't have to. It's unfortunate, really, and I worry that it scares away a lot of gamers that don't want to deal with a bunch of games that cater to a very specific male audience.

Anyway, great post, and you offer a position that I feel not many others can really provide. :)Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-71554238684063405012012-08-03T17:36:16.594-07:002012-08-03T17:36:16.594-07:00This title actually looks pretty fun to me. It's hilarious reviewers complaining that it doesn't have enough depth, what did they expect from a handheld game with the subtitle "Rumble Blast" ?

As many people may disagree with me, I wish Pokemon had more casual and action-like titles.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-28199478890527943402012-06-22T23:26:16.073-07:002012-06-22T23:26:16.073-07:00Well, I'm not really a fan of the colors, for ...Well, I'm not really a fan of the colors, for one :P Out of those currently available, I'd only go for the all white version.

I don't really see a point of going bigger, but the longer battery life is nice. I also can see that the larger size might help with hand cramps, which I get pretty often with the current 3DS model.

For me, the most surprising thing about all this is why Nintendo decided to announce it now. Of course we knew a redesign was coming, but why wait to announce it AFTER E3? Wouldn't they rather put all their focus on the Wii U, and not force consumers to choose one or the other? Maybe there won't be many people who say "well I'm only going to get one Nintendo console this year," so that might not be an issue.

Obviously since the system is coming out so soon, they could have showed it at E3 if they wanted, right? I just wonder what goes into these sometime mind-boggling decisions Nintendo makes ;)Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06637963404223994029noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-6624854604687346022012-06-22T13:02:50.290-07:002012-06-22T13:02:50.290-07:00Marcus: Oh, yes, we all should have known a revisi...Marcus: Oh, yes, we all should have known a revision/re-release of some sort was coming. Is this what I expected? Yeah, pretty much. The DSi XL/LL seems to have been really popular for Nintendo, so releasing a larger-screened 3DS seems about right.

BTW, a lot of people without sight issues LOVE the DSi XL/LL. I haven't played one myself, but I don't think the larger screens really are supposed to be for old people or people with bad eyesight.

Anyway, I think the 3DS XL/LL seems interesting, and I may pick one up eventually, but I likely won't do so anytime soon. Like you, I'm fine with my current 3DS, despite the fact that it isn't perfect.

I do like the idea of eventually having a larger system to hold onto, BTW. My hands cramp up whenever I try to play Mario Kart 7, for instance, and a slightly larger system could help with that...Bryan Ochallahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16256591698209804728noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-378624533139986782012-06-14T23:12:06.085-07:002012-06-14T23:12:06.085-07:00Thanks for the informative write-up, Marcus! I had...Thanks for the informative write-up, Marcus! I had no idea you got to go to E3! I'm insanely jealous :P Did you stop by Natsume's booth, or talk to the XSEED guys? (I hear they didn't have a booth but were floating around the show floor)

Anyways, though NintendoLand sounds pretty cute, it personally won't be a system seller for me, much like Wii Sports wasn't exactly the big draw of the Wii. Hopefully Nintendo will go the sensible route and bundle it with the system on launch!

I'm a little miffed by the whole idea of 5 people playing together... Isn't that an odd number? (well it is LITERALLY, haha) I can barely manage to get 4 people in the living room at one time, let alone 5... I feel like that's just an arbitrary pick because they wanted people to be able to use all 4 Wiimotes if they have them? Anyways, hopefully there will be some kind of online play, as I highly doubt many people will be able to play with 5 friends all in the same place.

As I mentioned on my blog, I'm not 100% sold on the Wii U right now... Mainly because there aren't any "must have" games that have been announced for launch or in development. I need an Animal Crossing, Harvest Moon, or some equally cute mindless thing to entice me... Though Pikmin 3 is a good start! (I just haven't played any Pikmin so I can't fully appreciate it)

Oh, by the way, how does the GamePad feel? Is it like the Vita, where it looks big at first glance but actually feels comfortable once you hold it and start using it? I have to say I'm not really sure I like the whole setup, though the idea of taking whatever game you're currently playing on the TV and continuing play on the GamePad sounds really neat.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06637963404223994029noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-28856022591187617782012-06-14T13:06:31.781-07:002012-06-14T13:06:31.781-07:00I came in with practically no positive expectation...I came in with practically no positive expectations so that may have been part of it. It just seemed so dumb to be that yet another party/minigame thing would be Nintendo's focus but they definitely appear to have put real effort into this.

I'm thinking that maybe 1/3rd of the games will be single player experiences, at least that's the hope.

Yup, if Nintendo has a feature for single player modes in these multiplayer games, or online, then that will make this a stronger Wii U title. If you really do need people with you to play then it's unfair to everyone who doesn't have people to play with, or a million Wii Remotes. :P

No problem! I think that a lot of people don't like what Nintendo Land seems like but having a hands-on experience is helpful. I guess i'ts kind of like the Wii in that regard.Marcushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04418938692413450900noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-807699341663274405.post-87593125096672635782012-06-14T12:44:21.700-07:002012-06-14T12:44:21.700-07:00Ah, I've been waiting for this post ever since...Ah, I've been waiting for this post ever since you mentioned it over on my blog, Marcus!

Sounds like you liked Nintendo Land pretty well, eh? Well, aside from the fact that what was on display made it seem like solo-focused offerings may be slim in this particular compilation.

Speaking to that, I really, *really* hope Nintendo either allows online multiplayer play for each of these mini-games or does what it can to give each mini-game an enjoyable solo-play option. Otherwise, I fear it will be ignored by gamers like you and me.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your impressions on this one.
